If you are elderly or disabled and cannot get around the property, or use all the facilities, it may be possible to get adaptations carried out to make your home more suitable for you.
What adaptations do you need?
Types of adaptations could include:
- grab rails for the bathroom or entrance
- a ramp
- widening doors for wheelchair access
- a stair lift.
You will need to know what adaptations you need before deciding whether it is possible to stay in your home. You also need to work out how much work needs to be done and how much it is likely to cost.
To do this get advice from a qualified person. The council's social services department may be able to carry out an assessment of your needs that will include adaptations if necessary. Foundations, the national co-ordinating body for Home Improvement Agencies, may be able to help you find a home improvement agency in your area that can help you.
What tenancy rights do you have?
It may not be worth you getting adaptations done if you are renting your home and your landlord could evict you easily or you have a short-term tenancy agreement. However, if you have stronger tenancy rights getting adaptations done may be the best option.
Another important factor is whether your landlord agrees to the adaptations being done. Some landlords may be reluctant to agree because adaptations can sometimes make properties less attractive to other tenants.
When should you contact your landlord?
You will need your landlord's agreement before any works are carried out to your home. Contact your landlord and explain what adaptations you need and how much they will cost. Your landlord may agree to do the adaptations or allow you to do them. It may be possible for you or your landlord to get a grant to cover the cost.
If your landlord does not agree you will probably not be able to get the adaptations done. Your landlord may be able to evict you if you make alterations to the property without permission. Contact a local advice centre if you are in this situation - use our directory to find one.
Can you get a grant?
You may be able to get a council grant to cover some or all of the cost. Whether or not you will get a grant depends on:
- the reason the adaptations are needed
- your income and capital
- how much money the council has in its budget.

Is moving out your best option?
If you can't get adaptations done you may need to look into other housing options. If it's not reasonable for you to stay in your home, you may be able to get help from the council.
